Darjeeling transforms into World Cup town
Darjeeling, 02 Jun:
World Cup buzz in Darjeeling has commenced with the launch of Darjeeling, The World Cup Town campaign today at Chowrasta in Darjeeling. The campaign is being organised by Darjeeling North Point School Alumni Association [DNPSAA] with the support of more than a dozen associations and citizen groups along with students and football lovers.
“It is to celebrate World Cup but more importantly, it is to send a message to people outside Darjeeling that Darjeeling is peaceful and beautiful. We want to show it to the world that Darjeeling is now peaceful and urge them to come and visit our beautiful Darjeeling. World Cup is also about unity across the world. It is an occasion to come together and celebrate unity,” said DNPSAA member, Ajay Edward.
Mr Edward further added, “30-40 years ago, Darjeeling used to host Gold Cup which used to be a major football tournament. Clubs from Kolkata, Nepal and Bhutan used to come and play. We request the Government of West Bengal to revive this tournament as it will be good for local football talents and help promotion of sports in the hills.”
It is further informed that Darjeeling, The World Cup Town campaign has also been organized as a fund raiser for a social cause “Clinic on Wheels”. Under this, an ambulance with test laboratory will be plying to remote villages and tea estates to provide medical facilities to the villagers along with various test facilities.
“People in villages have to spend money and time to come to Darjeeling and get their medical tests done. So we thought of providing the Clinic on Wheels project for which we have approached various schools and social organisations. Darjeeling, The World Cup Town will also help us raise funds for the same with the contribution of school students, citizens and associations. Soon our Clinic on Wheels will be on the road,” Mr Edward informed.
