Namchi, 03 Jun:
Forest Department, along with Roads and Bridges and Public Works Department, initiated a mass avenue plantation drive today along the Damthang-Temi Tarku stretch in South Sikkim.
The plantation drive is one of the initiatives under State Government’s ‘Paryavaran Mahotsav’ which starts from 15 June every year. The plantation drive is also a curtain raiser for World Environment Day 2018 on 05 June being held this year on the theme, ‘Beat Plastic Pollution.
The plantation drive was attended by Forest Minister, Tshering Wangdi Lepcha, Roads & Bridges Minister, GM Gurung, department officials and residents.
During the interaction with panchayats, officers and general public, Mr Lepcha urged the residents to become caretakers of the planted saplings and be more responsible towards the environment.
Mr Gurung, in his address, urged the gathering to protect trees in order to prevent landslides. He advised the forest officers and the panchayats to carry out plantation drives throughout the area.
Earlier, Forest Minister along with department officials had carried out a cleanliness drive at Damthang Bazaar.
More than 300 saplings of rhododendron and cherry were planted.
The plantation drive is set to continue for the next four days.
