Nehru Yuva Kendra, Namchi, conducted a thematic debate on Sustainable Development Goals [13 & 14] of the United Nations on World Environment Day, 05 June, at Hotel Blue Tamarind in Namchi, a press release informs.
The programme was attended by Chairperson, Namchi Municipal Council [NMC], Udai Chandra Rai, as chief guest and had Municipal Executive Officer, NMC, Rajiv Rai, as special guest accompanied by coordinator of Doing Good Organisation, Namchi, Kul Prasad Chettri, United Nations Volunteers-District Youth Coordinator [UNV-DYC], NYK Namchi, Sangita Dahal, members of different youth clubs of South district, volunteers of Doing Good organization and National Youth Volunteers of South Sikkim.
On the occasion, a quiz competition on environment was also held among the participants.
For the thematic debate, six speakers spoke on “Beat Plastic Pollution” for five minutes each. Sanjay Rai secured the first position with Rewaj Subba and Bijay Rai bagging the second and third positions respectively.
Addressing the gathering, UNV-DYC, Ms Dahal, highlighted the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action) and 14 (Life below Water) and 15 (Life on Land).
“Sikkim is ahead of the rest of the world in Sustainable Development Goals of UN,” she expressed.
MEO, NMC, Mr Rai, in his address said, “We should care for our environment like a mother does a child. Plastic is everywhere, from the deepest oceans to the top of the hills. We should now refer to dustbins as resource-recovering bins since nowadays we can put even waste to productive use.”
Speaking on waste management, the NMC Chairperson said, “We are focusing on waste segregation at source itself. Soon Namchi will be a Smart City so people of Namchi should also be smart to live here. The NMC is also ready to setup plastic recycling plant to manage waste plastic. I request everyone living in Namchi to start management of waste from home itself.”
