Union Defense Minister to inaugurate 578m tunnel at Theng

Union Defense Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, is expected arrive in Sikkim on 07 June to inaugurate the 578m tunnel constructed at Theng in North Sikkim to by-pass the landslide prone zone and difficult geographical terrain. The project was entrusted to Project Swastik, a sister organization of Border Roads Organisation, in May 2016.
Theng Bhir, a permanent trouble spot, is on the road that connects high altitude border posts as well as tourist destinations and district headquarters and alpine valleys North Sikkim especially Gurudongmar, Yungthang, Lachen and Lachung.
BRO sources informed that the Defense Minister will take a defense chopper from Bagdogra Airport to North Sikkim to inaugurate the tunnel.
This will be the first ever visit of Ms Sitharaman to Sikkim after assuming the charge of Defense Minister last year. After inaugurating the tunnel, she is expected to have a meeting with Defense personnel, sources inform.
