Gangtok, 08 Jun:
President, Sikkim Mountaineering Association [SMA], Kunzang Gyatso, has demanded answers from the concerned departments regarding the ‘disappearance’ of Rs 1.4 crore sanctioned by Chief Minister Pawan Chamling in 2013 to sponsor SMA’s expedition to Mount Everest in 2015.
“Since 2013 many young mountaineers from Assam, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and other States have climbed Mount Everest more than once while our young mountaineers languish waiting for the day when their dreams may come true,” Mr Gyatso states in a press release issued today.
Mr Gyatso has asked why the Vigilance Department has not enquired into the ‘disappeared’ funds in the past five years.
He has further criticized Tourism Department for not looking into the matter and has sought an enquiry as the funds were reportedly routed through them.
“We, the Sikkim Mountaineering Association (SMA) and young mountaineers of Sikkim, would like to request the government and all concerned to please institute an immediate inquiry into this matter,” the release reads.
