Rotary Club Gangtok South honours unsung heroes


Gangtok, 10 Jun:

Rotary Club of Gangtok South, on Saturday, recognized the services of three heroes, felicitating them for their persistent and selfless contributions towards preserving the culture and heritage of the State. The felicitated individuals are Kamal Lamichaney, Jorden Lepcha and Passang Sherpa.

The felicitation programme had Angad Prasad Yadav, Commandant, ITBP, Tadong, as chief guest and Mr. Karma Tashi Bhutia, chairperson, Travel Agent Association of Sikkim as guest of honour.

Mr Lamichaney has devoted his entire life to the field of Nepali traditional music and makes musical instruments like the Madal, Dumphu, Dukit Tabala and Nawmati Baaja sets. He has opened a shop at Tambutar, Chota Singtam, selling these handcrafted instruments.

Mr. Lepcha from Dzongu was felicitated for his “artistic mastery” of traditional bamboo weaving of the Lepcha community, while Mr Sherpa has been an “active crusader for propagation and preservation of the Sherpa community’s rich culture and traditions”.

Bhaichung Lepcha, president, Rotary Club of Gangtok South, proposed the welcome address while PK Dong presented a brief introduction to Rotary Vocational Service Awards. The programme ended by with a vote of thanks by Geeta Chettri.
