SSC vice-convener releases book on fuel price hike

Gangtok, 14 Jun:

Sikkim Subject Committee convener and former MP, Pahalman Subba today released a book written by SSC vice-convener, Nawin Kiran Pradhan titled ‘I Can’t Bear the Cost of Petrol: Common Man’.

Mr Pradhan while introducing the book said that the book is dedicated to the people of Sikkim and the nation. He further informed that the book is based on the recent hike in the price of petrol and diesel.

He also mentioned that the book is the voice of people terrorized by the rise of fuel prices in the nation.

It is not a thesis but has basic information for people on petroleum, its demand and oil pricing mechanism in the world and in the country, he added.

“The present Sikkim Sales Tax is 25% of the base price for petrol and 12.5% of base price for diesel. In 2013, SST for petrol was 20% and 10% for diesel. Subsequently, it was 25% and 15% in 2015 and it was 27% and 17.5% in 2016 for petrol and diesel. However, due to sales drop, the SST structure was changed to 25% for petrol and 12.5% for diesel in year 2015, which has been continued since then,” he said.

Mr Pradhan stated that it is very unfortunate for the common man to pay high price for fuel due to high taxes.

Further, he shared his plans to post the book to all political parties in the State and the Central Government. The book will be available for sale in the market from Friday at the cost of Rs 30.

SSC also plans to hold a bicycle rally from Rangpo to Ranipool to highlight the issue of high fuel prices, he informed.
