981 students graduate from ICFAI University Governor and CM conferred honorary Doctorate degrees

Gangtok, 15 Jun:

The convocation ceremony of 981 graduating students of various disciplines of ICFAI University, Sikkim was held at Chintan Bhawan in Gangtok today.

During the function, Governor Shriniwas Patil was conferred with the Degree of Doctor of Science [Honoris Causa] in recognition of his immense contributions to the society while Chief Minister Pawan Chamling was conferred with the Degree of Doctor of Literature [Honoris Causa] by ICFAI University in recognition of the transformational initiatives taken for the State in key development areas for the past 24 years.

It may be mentioned here, Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu, was slated to preside over the function but due to inclement weather conditions, his visit was cancelled.

In his acceptance speech, Governor Patil thanked ICFAI University for bestowing such honour on him.

With his tenure as Governor of Sikkim nearing its end, he also expressed his gratitude and love to the State and dedicated his degree to the “wonderful State of Sikkim”.

He added that he and his wife, First Lady Rajini Devi Patil, have loved every moment spent here in Sikkim.

Similarly, expressing pleasure at the recognition received, Chief Minister Pawan Chamling dedicated the award to the people of Sikkim.

He stated that in a fast changing world of education, there is a need to adapt to new technologies since traditional knowledge has become outdated.

Elucidating the challenges of the education system, he stated that maintaining sanctity of education is a significant challenge and there is a need to do much more than just get degrees.

“It has been a constant effort of the State Government to transform the State into an education hub,” he expressed.

Thanking ICFAI University, he dedicated the honour to the people of Sikkim and thanked the people for consistently reposing faith in him.

This was followed by the presentation of awards of gold and silver medals to the students.

Message of the Vice President was also read out during the event wherein he congratulated the graduating students and also congratulated the ICFAI team “for opening the door of higher learning to the remote and resourceful region of North East”.

The message further added, “Your contribution to the emotional integration of the Northeast with the larger union will indeed go a long way for this great country.”
