In conversation with LGBT+ icon Tenzin Mariko at Rachna Books
Gangtok, 15 Jun:
An enthralling session with Tenzin Mariko, the first openly transgender Tibetan woman and a LGBT+ community icon, was held at Rachna Books, Gangtok today. The session 'In conversation with Tenzin Mariko' was moderated by Vishaka Diyali, guest faculty, Sikkim University.
This is not the first such event organised by Rachna Books. The popular book store has already organised similar events on LGBT+ in the past as well.
Tenzin Mariko is an aspiring makeup artist and dancer and perhaps the biggest star in a community that, until her arrival, had been bereft of LGBT idols.
Mariko formerly Tashi was a monk learning the higher philosophy of Buddhism at Dharmasala, Darjeeling and later in Nepal. She made her first public appearance as a performer at the 2015 Miss Tibet pageant in Dharmasala. Later, she gave up monkhood to become the first openly transgender woman in the Tibetan community.
The session ended with a captivating discussion and answers by Mariko to questions put forward by the participants of the event.
