Incessant rainfall floods residences with debris in Dzongu

Continuous downpour on Friday night has caused havoc at Pheedang village in Lower Dzongu, North Sikkim where the overflowing water pushed debris into several houses in the area.
The houses of Lakpa Lepcha, Lakit Doma Lepcha, Ongden Lepcha and Pema Wangyal Lepcha have been majorly affected. The downpour brought piles of debris into their houses following which they not only had to vacate their residences but also had to battle all nightdiverting water to the roadside with the help of neighbours.
The residents have complained that they have several times requested the GREF for the construction of proper drainage system in the area but the GREF till date has not paid heed to their requests.
Adding to their grievances, the water from Namphong Khola has been diverted by the new cutting of PMGSY road leading to Sangtok village under PWD Department. The public here have requested for the safety of their lives and properties and have urged for a permanent solution to the problem.The heavy rain also damaged the drinking water supply in the area.
Incessant rainfall in North district had also damaged several roads resulting in Gangtok-Mangan road blockage at several places like Namok Khola, Tumlong, etc. However, traffic resumed after restoration work done today.
