Book on Pawan Chamling out on bookstands

GANGTOK, 20 Jun:

A book about Chief Minister Pawan Chamling titled "Pawan Chamling: Champion of Social Justice", by Howard A Barnes and Jiwan Rai is now available for readers in the market. The book was officially released by Governor Shriniwas Patil on 26 January this year and was launched recently in the market.

Speaking about the book in a press conference here today, co-author of the book, Mr Rai mentioned that the book mainly covers the politics of redistribution, politics of identity and inclusive approaches of the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and his government. He mentioned that based on these themes the book has explained the politics of redistribution for poverty reduction and transformation in Sikkim after 1994. The book also covers the policies, initiatives and achievements in the education and health sectors.

Mr Rai said that the book also includes cultural and linguistic development that has taken place under the present government. It took one and a half years to research and write the book, he added.

Howard A Barnes is a scientist based in the north-west of England and is currently an honorary professor at the University of Chester, England. He has authored nearly eighty scientific publications and is the co-author of a bestselling science textbook. He has been honoured by the Queen of England with the OBE and has been the recipient of a number of scientific prizes. He is also a fellow of the British Royal Academy of Engineering.

Jiwan Rai is a social and political commentator from Sikkim and has been writing columns and articles in various regional English dailies and magazines for more than a decade. He started his career as a teacher in 1996 and resigned in 2014. He is also a recipient of the National BOLT Award for 2006-07, which was presented by the then President, APJ Abdul Kalam.
