Gangtok observes International Yoga Day for peace

Gangtok, 21 Jun:

The 4th International Yoga Day with the theme “Yoga for Peace” was observed in a grand manner here at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok today.

Students from several schools in and around Gangtok participated in demonstration of different yog asanas conducted by chief yoga instructor, Jaganath Niroula.

Members of Sikkim Police, Indo Tibetan Border Police, Red Cross Society, Art of Living, Sant Nirankari Mission, Marwari Yuva Manch, India Reserve Battalion, National Service Scheme, National Cadet Corps, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Sashastra Seema Bal and State Armed Police Forces also participated in the mass demonstration.

Organized by Sikkim State AYUSH and the Department of Health Care, Human Services & Family Welfare, the State level celebration had the presence of Governor Shriniwas Patil as chief guest and Deputy Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly, Sonam Gyatso Lepcha, as guest of honor.

The yoga demonstrators performed yog asanas as per the common yoga protocol designed by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.

The Governor, in his brief address, congratulated all the participants and said that he was proud that a healthy practice like yoga is identified with Indians.

Appreciating the initiative of the State Government of introducing yoga in the school curriculum of all Government schools in the State, the Governor said that it will help boost the State’s Swastha Sikkim mission along with enhancing students’ lives.

“Yoga is now being accepted and welcomed globally and has been successful in bringing unity amongst people of different countries. The celebration of International Yoga Day disseminates the message of universal brotherhood,” the Governor added.

He thanked everyone, especially the students, for braving the rain and turning up for the yoga demonstration and ended his note urging the people to take up yoga seriously.

Earlier, Minister for Health Care, Human Services & Family Welfare Department, Arjun Kumar Ghatani, in his welcome address, spoke on the importance and awareness on the benefits of the practice of yoga. He also stated that this form of exercise will not only keep the body fit but it will also clean the mind through meditation and self-realization.

Commissioner cum Secretary, Health Department, Vishal Chauhan, delivered the vote of thanks while expressing gratitude to all the participants for their spirit of determination and to the department heads and officials as well as the press and media for attending the event.

Also present for the event were Mayor, Gangtok Municipal Corporation, Shakti Singh Chaudhary, Director General of Police, Sikkim Police, SD Negi, and heads of various departments.
