West district celebrates International Yoga Day in Gyalshing


Gyalshing, 21 Jun [IPR]:

The 4th International Yoga Day was observed in West Sikkim under the initiative of Minister for Urban Development & Housing Department, NK Subba, at Bhanu Shalig in Gyalshing today.

Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly, KN Rai, attended the occasion as chief guest accompanied by Yangthang MLA, Chandra Maya Subba, District Collector, Dr AB Karki, Superintendent of Police, West, Tenzing Loden Lepcha, Additional District Collector, Karma Lodey Lepcha, Chairperson, Gyalshing Municipal Council, IK Neopaney, and other officials of West District Administration Centre.

Speaker, SLA, Mr Rai, addressed the gathering on the importance of yoga and its benefits. He stated that Yoga allows the fitness of the mind and the body which is also an ancient art of India. He also acknowledged the recent popularity of yoga in the world and encouraged students to practice it to relieve stress and for proper concentration in their studies.

District Collector, Dr Karki, in his welcome address stressed on the importance of yoga as a medium of being fit and healthy.

The yoga session was conducted by Phurba Doma Bhutia from the Art of Living wherein she demonstrated various yoga postures for the invitee participants from schools and other institutions of Gyalshing and Pelling area.

Minister, UD&HD, Mr Subba, concluded the programme by presenting token of appreciation to the participating schools and institutions of Gyalshing and Pelling.

It may be mentioned here, the idea of International Day of Yoga was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his speech at the UN General Assembly on 27 Sept 2014 where he has urged all to work towards adopting an International Yoga Day to discover sense of oneness with oneself, the world and the nature.
