NE States to play in Ranji Trophy for the first time
Gangtok, 23 Jun:
Board of Control for Cricket in India [BCCI] held its Special General Meeting [SGM] in Delhi on 22 Jun with president of Sikkim Cricket Association [SCA], Lobzang G Tenzing, representing Sikkim, an SCA press release informs.
The main agenda of the meeting was with regard to North East States’ participation in the Ranji Trophy for the first time in a new format. The existing Ranji teams will be included in the “Elite Division” and the rest in “Plate Division”, it is informed.
It was further decided during the meeting that in the upcoming domestic season, new teams including North Eastern States and Bihar will be playing against each other in the Plate Division. The top two teams from the Plate Division will then face the bottom two sides of group A, B and C of the Elite Division. The best two will be promoted to the Elite Division in the following season while the bottom two from the Elite Division will be relegated to Plate Division, the release adds.
While the modalities are being worked out, SCA president, Mr Tenzing, has expressed happiness on NE States being part of the Ranji Trophy for the first time.
“This is the result of the hard work put up by the office bearers of North East States Associations in the last two years. The United Front of Cricket Associations of Northeast States under the umbrella of North East Cricket Development Committee [NECDC] has been at the forefront of lobbying for development of Cricket in NE. This is a brilliant chance for our boys to showcase their talent in the National arena and playing for the National Team and IPL in future as Ranji Trophy is the main platform,” he added.
Mr Tenzing has extended best wishes to the players of SCA for the upcoming season and has urged senior cricketers to take up cricket more seriously. He also mentioned that he now waits for SCA to be a member of BCCI with full voting rights.
