EPIC 17K Mountain Biking Race reaches Thangu Issac Rai wins King of the Mountain title

The third stage of EPIC 17K Mountain Biking Race covering a distance of 83 kilometers from Lachung to Thangu was flagged off earlier today from Lachung in North Sikkim by District Collector, North, Karma R Bonpo. Titled as the King of the Mountain, the winner of this stage will receive a separate cash prize of Rs 20,000 after completing the stage in a total time of 8 hours.

The King of the Mountain stage was won by Issac Rai from SSB who completed the distance of 83 kms from Lachung to Thangu in a record time of 04 hours 47 minutes and 56 seconds. Shiven came in second by covering the course in 05 hours 04 minute and 07 seconds. The third rider to complete the course in 05 hours 04 minutes and 49 seconds was Tenzing Wongchuk from Bhutan.

Out of 66 participating riders, 31 riders completed the course and reached Thangu today. The rest of the participants who could not complete within the stipulated time of eight hours were carried by a sweep vehicle to Thangu. The successful riders will be halting at Thangu for the night and will compete for the ultimate ride to Gurudongmar on 29 Jun.

Hailing from various backgrounds, the riders include elite professional riders, doctors, bureaucrats, amateurs, armed personnel. The final race of EPIC 17K MTB on 29 Jun will be witnessed by representatives from Red Bull, it is informed.

On 27 Jun, the Lachung Dzumsa organised a cultural show for the participants and a thanksgiving ceremony for the various hotels of Lachung that had sponsored a total of 75 hotel rooms.

The Pipons and youth of Lachung provided full co-operation and support for the organization at Lachung and have expressed excitement in hosting the future editions of the race.

It may be mentioned here, the main sponsor of the event is Minister for Forest Environment & Wildlife Management Department, Tshering Wangdi Lepcha. The event carries the theme of ‘Secure Himalaya’ for the conservation of locally and globally significant biodiversity and forest resource of Himalayan ecosystem along with promotion of the message of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao.
