Gangtok, 02 Jul:

East District Food Security & Agriculture Development [FS&ADD], in collaboration with Horticulture & Cash Crop Development Department [H&CDD] and Forest, Environment & Wildlife Management Department [FE&WMD], organized massive plantation drive today here at its head office in the ICAR complex, Tadong.

The drive, organized as part of the Paryavaran Mahotsav 2018, was led by Director, H&CDD, T Pintso, and participated in by the officials and field staff of the three departments.

The H&CDD provided 50 saplings each of guavas and oranges, 20 saplings of papaya and six red banana saplings.

Likewise, the FE&WMD managed saplings of ornamental flowers like Camelia [50], Azalea [50] and Neelkamal [150].

In her brief address, Joint Director [East], FS&ADD, Beena Rai, informed that her office has been organizing cleanliness drives and other activities every month but this was for the first time that such a huge collaborative programme was organized.

“The main objective of the programme is to make individual contributions towards saving the environment,” Ms Rai stated.

She further informed that another motive was to convert the barren government land in and around the office into cultivable land so that the government can earn some revenue from the same.

She also delved on the potential of agro-forestry to make more contributions towards a clean and green environment.

Divisional Forest Officer, Sonam Bhutia, in her address, urged the participants to ensure proper care and protection of the saplings after the plantation.

She informed that the Forest Department is organizing various programmes in collaboration with different government departments in a bid to save the environment but individual care for the planted saplings was a must to achieve the goal.

Director, H&CCD, Mr Pintso, directed the JD [East] to ensure that every sapling planted in the vicinity receives proper care and protection so that all the plants yield fruit in days to come.
