Pre-launch programme for Akkar Summer Cup Open Football Tourney

Jorethang, 03Jul [IPR]:

The pre-launch programme for the maiden Akkar Summer Cup Open Football Tournament organized by Jorethang Football Club [JFC] was held at Gandhi Lane in Jorethang, South Sikkim today.

Minister for Information and Public Relations Department and patron-in-chief, AK Ghatani along with Senior Engineer [Power], Jigme Namgyal, Nayabazaar Jorethang Municipal Committee members and officials from various departments attended the function.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Ghatani extended his best wishes for the first edition of the Akkar Summer Cup Open Football Tournament which is being organized in Zoom-Salghari constituency.

Explaining the aims and objectives of organizing the tournament, Mr Ghatani informed that the tourney is being held to generate awareness on drug abuse.

He also underlined the importance of inculcating the habit of playing football and other sports. He said that youth who engage in sporting activities learn good sportsmanship qualities and stay away from unproductive activities.

The tournament is expected to have 18 teams competing for the winner's trophy and will kick off from 04 Jul at Jorethang playground. The tournament will wrap up on 21 Jul.

Winner of the tournament will receive cash prize of Rs 1.25 lakh while the runner-up team will receive Rs 75,000.

During the course of the programme, Mr Ghatani along with the dignitaries handed over an inverter set to DRISHYA Rehabilitation Centre, Samatar on behalf of MERA Camp, Gangtok.
