Daramdin wins West Sikkim inter-constituency football tournament Gyalshing to get football academy i

Gyalshing, 07 Jul:

The final of the inter-constituency football tournament [men’s open] organized by Sikkim Democratic Front’s West district committee was played at Kyongsa ground in Gyalshing, West Sikkim wherein Daramdin secured a win over Yuksom-Tashiding in a tiebreaker 4-3.

The programme today had the presence of Chief Minister Pawan Chamling as chief guest.

In his speech, the CM appreciated the initiative of the SDF West district committee in conducting the tournament and suggested that other SDF district committees should take similar steps.

He also informed about the State Government’s decision to provide 5% reservation in government jobs for sportspersons along with provision of annual grant of Rs 10 lakh to ‘A’ grade sports clubs and Rs 5 lakh to ‘B’ grade sports clubs of Sikkim. He also announced the opening of a football academy in Gyalshing next year.

The CM further informed that football playgrounds and volleyball & badminton courts will be set up by the State Government in every GPU. For the same, he asked the Panchayats and MLAs to take the initiative for procurement of appropriate land.

“We will try to set them up on government land. If government lands are not available, we will acquire private land for the playground,” he said.

The CM also announced annual grants to literary associations, dance, music and art academies registered with the government. The ‘A’ grade associations and academies will receive annual grant of Rs 5 lakh while ‘B’ grade academies will get annual grant of Rs 3 lakh from the State Government, he added.

He informed that works for new roads have been sanctioned based on demands received during his 32-day tour of Sikkim.

“For West Sikkim, we have sanctioned 35 km road for each constituency. By Aug this year, works worth Rs 1,000 crore will be sanctioned and the works will be tendered at village level. The contract works will have to be done by a person from the area where the work is to be undertaken. Persons from other areas cannot bid for works of other areas,” he added.

Highlighting on the Mega Start Up Mela scheduled to be held in Gangtok on 17 Jul, the CM urged the youth to focus on being self-reliant for which the State Government has made available various schemes.

During the programme, the SDF West district committee felicitated international and ISL footballers, Nirmal Chettri, Sanju Pradhan, Bikash Jairu, Robin Gurung and Uttam Rai, along with international women football players namely Nim Lhamu Bhutia and Lhako Phuti Bhutia. Mementos were handed over to them by the CM on the occasion.

Further, 15 ex-footballers from eight constituencies of the district were also felicitated during the programme.

It may be mentioned here, the inter-constituency football tournament [men’s open] that had commenced on 01 Jun had been organized in U-14, U-19 and open categories for both girls and boys of West district. Best 25 football players spotted in U-14 category and 25 more in U-19 category will be selected for admission in the upcoming Gyalshing Football Academy.
