Incessant rainfall damages Mangan public ground

Mangan, 09 Jul:

Mangan public ground in North Sikkim had been upgraded and renovated only a few years back but heavy rainfall in the past few weeks has left the ground in deplorable condition. The entire stretch of the northern side of the gallery collapsed on 08 Jul. The debris and rubble has also occupied some portion of the ground.

Apart from this, a crack has also developed on the road leading to Pentok allowing the movement of only light vehicles along the stretch. The concerned department is yet to visit the spot to take stock of damages and undertake further mitigation of the slide.

“It is disheartening to see that a newly constructed wall has been damaged,” expressed one of the residents of Mangan.

The current condition of the only ground in the town that hosts the popular Independence Day football tournament organized by North District Football Association [NDFA] raises doubts over the possibility of the tourney this year.
