Gangtok, 17 Jul:
Senior journalist, Khagendra Mani Pradhan, was today conferred the prestigious Khangchendzonga Kalam Puraskar during the 16th Foundation Day celebration of the Press Club of Sikkim at Janta Bhawan in Gangtok.
Minister for Agriculture, Somnath Poudyal, attended the function as chief guest along with Minister for Health & IPR, AK Ghatani, as guest of honour.
Journalist, Nirmal Mangar, was also awarded the Lagansheel Yuva Patrakar award while journalists, Dil Bahadur Chettri and Hema Sharma, were felicitated for their contributions to Sikkimese media.
Speaking at the event, Mr Ghatani congratulated the awardees and praised senior journalist, Khagendra Mani Pradhan, for being an inspiration.
He also urged all the concerned stakeholders to take the recognition to thenext level and not limit themselves.
“Freedom of expression is one of the prime pillars of a democratic society. However,some have been abusing this freedom in Sikkim,” expressed Mr Ghatani.
Mr Ghatani also announced a grant of Rs 1.5 lakhfor PCS.
Addressing the gathering, chief guest MrPoudyal praised the Sikkimese media for being a medium that has delivered important public related information for the greater good of the society.
Congratulating all the awardees, he stated that there is pertinent danger to democracy emanating from ignorance, excessive individualism and materialism.
“Democracy stresses on collective idea of greater good for greater number of individuals so the Fourth Estate needs to continue delivering the best in the interest of the State,” he added.
He further made an appeal through the media to start a revolution through one’s conscience and opt for local organic produce which will have multiple benefits including health benefits, support for farmers and inflow and retention of money within Sikkim.
Due to ill health of senior journalist, Khagendra Mani Pradhan, his award was received by his son and younger brother.
