SLYA forms its 22nd‘kyong’ branch in Patuk


Gangtok, 23 Jul:

Sikkim LepchaYouth Association [SLYA] held a meeting with the Lepcha community of Patuk village, under Tumin-LingeeConstituency in East Sikkim, at Patukon 21 Jul with the objective of establishing new kyong [village] branch of SLYA at Patuk. The meeting was attended by members of more than 150 Lepcha families residing in the village, a press release informs.

During the meet, the 22nd branch of SLYA was constitutedfor Patuk with PalchenLepchaas its president,ChuniLepcha as vice president,LodenLepcha as general secretary and RinzingLepchaas its treasurer.

Talking about the historical background of the organization, SLYA general secretary,LobsangChopelLepcha, stressed on the rights and privileges of the new executive members besides their duties and responsibilities as members of SLYA.

In an interactive session held with the village community, it was learnt that Patukalready had a non-registered Lepchaorganisation that has been functioning for past five years and has been working for the upliftment of the village community.

The village members especially the youth expressed their long felt desire to get affiliated with SLYA and work for the community in a much organized manner with a larger reach.

Apart from education, health, culture and heritage preservation, the meeting gave special emphasis on Organic Farming as a poverty alleviating programmeand an income generating component.

President, SLYA, OngdenTsheringLepcha, congratulated the nominated executive members of the newly formed body and encouraged them to work selflessly and diligently for uplifting the Lepcha society.

He expressed gratitude to the village community for supporting SLYA programmesand ensured every possible support. He further thanked the village elders and the members of each family for supporting the aspirations of the village youth to be organised under the banner of SLYA.
