CM’s statement “inflammatory and intimidating”: Denzong Sherpa Association

Gangtok, 31 Jul:

Denzong Sherpa Association has registered strong objection to the “inflammatory and intimidating” statement made by Chief Minister Pawan Chamling at the State level Panchayat and Urban Local Bodies Sammelan on Monday.

In a press release issued today, DSA has alleged that the Chief Minister stated that Sherpas are eyeing to buy Bhutia-Lepcha land while addressing the Sammelan. This was in reference to the demand from some sections that Sherpa lands be brought under Revenue Order No. 1 protection as against the exclusive-to-Sherpas protection proposed in a Bill passed by the Legislative Assembly recently.

The CM intends to bring disharmony, feelings of enmity and hatred among the Bhutia Lepcha and Sherpa communities of the state, the Association has alleged.

“Perceiving such grave threat to the Sherpa community in Sikkim, we have written to the President of India, Prime Minister along with all the Sherpa Organisations of India as well as Global Sherpa Association apprising them about the atrocity meted out to us by the State Government of Sikkim,” the release adds.

DSA has also appealed to all community organizations and political parties to clarify their stand on the atrocity meted out to the Sherpas of Sikkim.
