HPV vaccination drive begins in North Sikkim; 310 girls vaccinated
Mangan, 02Aug (IPR): The HPV vaccination campaign was launched in North District today by District Collector North, Karma R Bonpo.
The campaign kicked off from Mangan Senior Secondary School and was simultaneously carried out in several schools across the North District.
The launch campaign at Mangan SSS was also attended by Jt. Director HRDD, State HPV Nodal Officer Dr. Phumsay Denzongpa , DRCHO, President, Mangan Nagar Panchayat, teachers , parents and guardians of the children.
Dr Denzongpa sensitized the participants about the benefits of the vaccine and informed that it was not a new vaccine as 270 million doses of HPV vaccine has been administered worldwide with no major side effects and it has been recommended even by WHO and UNICEF.
She informed that many nations have made HPV vaccination a part of the routine vaccination schedule. The vaccine is administered in two doses in a gap of six months. The second dose will be administered in February next year and also simultaneously cover the girl child who have attained the age of nine years.
The District Collector, in his address, said that the HPV Vaccination was a path breaking initiative of the State Government and will lay the foundation for a strong and healthy Sikkim.
He said that the vaccine was available is private sectors at a price of around Rs 6,000 and that in Sikkim it was being provided free of cost.
He urged the health workers, teachers and parents and other stakeholders to make the campaign a success.
Around 310 girls in the age group of 9 to 14 years received the protection against Human Papilloma Virus today in the District. The HPV vaccination campaign will continue till 14 August.
