Jorethang I-Day MLA Challenge football tourney kicks off

Jorethang, 07 Aug [IPR]: The 72nd Independence Day Inter-Department Open MLA Challenge Football Tournament 2018 kicked off at Jorethang playground in South Sikkim today.

Minister for Roads & Bridges and Cultural Affairs & Heritage Departments, GM Gurung, attended the occasion as chief guest and declared the tournament open in the presence of Minister for Healthcare, Human Services & Family Welfare and IPR Departments, Arjun Kumar Ghatani, who is also the area MLA.

The first match of the tournament was played between Horticulture & Agriculture Department and Sikkim Police in which Sikkim Police emerged victorious 0-9.

Altogether, 12 departments have joined the tournament - Horticulture & Agriculture, Health, Food & Civil Supplies, Rural Management & Development Department, Motor Vehicle, Urban Development & Housing Department, Human Resource Development Department, Energy & Power, Sikkim Police, Melli Forest [Territorial], IRBn Pipalay and SISCO Namchi.

Chief guest, Mr Gurung, in his address urged students to be more focused on their education and pursue skill development, capabilities and develop strong work ethics for their better future.

He also encouraged people of Jorethang to endorse constructive work for the welfare and betterment of the people at large.

He also recalled the sacrifices and invaluable contributions made by freedom fighters to free India from British rule.

Further, he also urged people to live with their vision and spirit to develop the country towards unity, brotherhood and development as being witnessed by Sikkim during the last 24 years of good governance.
