Sikkimese chess players to represent Country for first time at Asian Cities Chess tourney

Gangtok A team has finished in the second place at the 19th National Cities Team Chess Championship held from 01-05 Aug at Siliguri in West Bengal. By finishing as the runner up, Gangtok A team has also qualified for the upcoming Asian Cities Chess Tournament where the team will be representing the Country.

Gangtok A team members areSushmita Lama, RohitGurung, Rahul Gurung, ThendupTamang and Suraj Gupta.

Three teams of Sikkim Chess Association [SCA] with five players in each group had represented Sikkim in this National Cities Team Chess Championship.

Gangtok B team comprised of UrganThinlay Sherpa, Rick Gupta, ChewangDorjee Bhutia, AnushaChhetri and Yangchen Lama, while PrakharDhangar, PanshulDhangar, Aradhya Raj Pokhrel, ShauryaSrivastava and AbhirajParajuli were in Gangtok C team. The State team was accompanied by Sikkim Chess Association general secretary, MahendraDhakal, as team manager.

Speaking to media persons today, MrDhakal informed that 32 teams from different parts of the country had participated in this national championship. He informed that only the top two teams in the championship have qualified for the upcoming Asian Cities Chess Tournament. He added that the date and venue has not been fixed yet for Asian Cities Chess Tournament.

“It is a big achievement for players of Sikkim and it is anhonour for them to represent India in the Asian Championship,” MrDhakal expressed.

He informed that Sikkimese players will be representing the country for the first time.

He further informed that Gangtok B and Gangtok C teams had also performed in this team championship and every player has improved their rating in the championship. He added that Gangtok A team members have already started preparations for the upcoming Asian Championship.
