93.51% girls receive first dose of HPV vaccine Phase-1 of HPV Vaccination Campaign to conclude on 14
Gangtok, 10 Aug:
The Human Papilloma Virus [HPV] Vaccination Campaign, initiated by the Department of Health Care, Human Services & Family Welfare, will conclude on 14 Aug, 2018. Any girl child in the 09-14 years age group who has missed the vaccine has been requested to avail of the same from the nearest Primary Health Centre, District Hospital or Urban PHC or STNM Hospital, Gangtok.
A press release issued by the Health Department mentions that the department had started the HPV Vaccination campaign for prevention of cervical cancer on 30 July this year.
The campaign is being conducted across the State covering school going girls of both private and government schools including out of school girls in the fore-mentioned age group.
Since the launch of the campaign, 23,633 girls out of an estimated 25,273 girls [93.51%] have already received the first dose of the vaccine. There have been no cases of any serious adverse event following the immunization.
The Health Department has expressed gratitude to the print and electronic media along with HRDD, Panchayati Raj and other line departments, ASHAs, parents and school teachers for extending full support and cooperation in implementing the campaign.
Incidentally, Sikkim has now become the first State in the country where all eligible girls are being vaccinated following WHO guidelines.
The release further informs that children who have received the first dose will be given a second dose of the vaccine in a similar campaign after six months, the timings for which will be notified later.
