Gangtok, 18 Aug:

A short film by Sikkimese filmmaker TribenyRai,‘Chhori’ [Daugther], has been selected for the 1st Nagaon International Short and Documentary Film Festival scheduled to be held on 08-09 Sept at Nagaon in Assam.

The 10-minute long film in Nepali language has been selected under the North East India [Short Film] category for the festival. Besides ‘Chhori’, six other films [five from Assam and one from Mizoram] have also been selected in the category.

27-year-old MsRai hails from Nandok near Ranipool in East Sikkim.

“Chhori is an autobiographical short film based on gender discrimination. Made on zero budget, it has been produced by DalleyKhorsani productions. The film has been shot in Nandok and adjacent village,Nimthang,” says MsRai.

Speaking on the theme of the film, MsRai says, “I feel gender discrimination is one the greatest problems that still plagues our society. The film actually began as a personal video journal where I could simply vent out my emotions. I was very skeptical about sending it to film festivals or screening it in public because it is extremely personal. Then my mother [GeetaRai] said this story needs to be told. In fact, she insisted that I submit the film to this particular festival. This film wouldn’t see the light of the day without my mother’s conviction and faith in the film.”
