Housing & Urban Affairs Union Minister calls on CM
Gangtok, 24 Aug:
Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep S Puri, called on Chief Minister Pawan Chamling at his official residence, Mintokgang, today.
This was a courtesy call by the Union Minister who is on an official visit to Sikkim.
Mr Puri was accompanied by Sikkim’s Minister of Urban Development & Housing Department, NK Subba, and UD&HD Secretary, LB Chettri, along with officials from the Union Ministry.
Mr Puri congratulated the CM for being the longest serving Chief Minister of the country and commended the achievements made by Sikkim under his leadership.
He further praised Central flagship programmes like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which has been so successfully implemented by the State and also applauded the many unique practices that have been successful models for the other states to follow. He also congratulated for selection of Gangtok and Namchi as the two smart cities and gave various inputs about other schemes that the State can implement.
The Union Minister further highlighted on the need of good surface and air connectivity in order to connect with the rest of the country.
“Although this is not under my ministry, I will extend every possible help and will surely pass the message to the Prime Minister,” said Mr Puri.
Chief Minister Mr Chamling spoke about various policies towards environment conservation which has resulted in a record 4% increase in forest cover and hoped that Sikkim will be acknowledged with a Peace Bonus from the Centre for maintaining peace and security.
“This will send a good message across to the rest of the States of the country,” said Mr Chamling while apprising the Union Minister about the State Government’s progress towards beautification and upgradation of bazaar areas.
The Union Minister thanked the CM for the hospitality and warm welcome and reiterated that the Centre will continue to extend all possible support to the State to sustain the high standards of development that it has set.
