Sikkim Newar Guthi preps for grand Indra Jatra festival
Gangtok, 24 Aug:
Sikkim Newar Guthi [SNG] is all set to organise State level Indra Jatra festival. The Newa Guthi has formed Indra Jatra Celebration Committee to celebrate and organise Indra Jatra with fitting grandeur under the chairmanship of Dilip Kumar Pradhan.
The three-daylong festival will be held from 21 to 23 Sept and will include a series of events, cultural performances and felicitations.
This was informed by the Newa Guthi during a press meet organised today at Press Club of Sikkim in Gangtok.
President, SNG, Dilu Kumar Pradhan, said that the Guthi is a social organinisation and has been engaged in organising Indra Jatras in the State since the year 2000.
He also highlighted the importance of celebrating Indra Jatra. This year’s Indra Jatra is being celebrated on the theme ‘Save Water’, he informed.
The list of events includes traditional food exhibition, traditional Newari dress exhibition cum sale, photo competition and handicraft, handloom and art exhibition cum sale scheduled to be held at MG Marg and Titanic Park.
It is further informed that the festival will be inaugurated at MG Marg on 21 Sept and will conclude with a special function to be held at Manan Kendra on 23 Sept.
The final day of the festival will feature the Kumari Rath Yatra that will start from Bhanu Path move via Zero Point through Sonam Gyatso Marg, Children’s Park, Titanic, Hospital Dara and conclude at Manan Kendra for the mega event of Indra Jatra 2018.
The festival will also have open talent hunt, folk dance competition, pickle making competition and many more.
The audition round for the talent hunt competition will begin soon from Soreng in West Sikkim followed by other districts. The competition is open to all and interested participants of any caste, community or religion can take participate, it is informed.
Winners of various competitive events will be presented with certificates and cash prizes.
The press meet was also attended by SNG vice president, Hari Prasad Pradhan, and SNG secretary, youth affairs, Dr Sushen Pradhan.
The organising committee has invited all to join and support the State level Indra Jatra festival 2018.
