SLSA conducts debate competition for Legal Literacy Clubs in East

Gangtok, 25 Aug:

Sikkim State Legal Services Authority under the directions of Acting Chief Justice, High Court of Sikkim, Justice MeenakshiMadanRai, who is also the Executive Chairperson of Sikkim SLSA, and as per the State Plan of Action, organized a debate competition on “Whether farmers should adopt organic farming or continue with conventional methods of farming” for students of Classes VIII-XII of Legal Literacy Clubs of eight schools established in the East district at ChintanBhawan in Gangtok today.

The programme commenced with the welcome note presented by Member Secretary, Sikkim SLSA, SurajChettri, who gave a brief introduction on the topics of the debate and apprised the gathering that the debate competition is one of the many initiatives undertaken to spread awareness amongst masses.

The debate competition had Senior Advocates, High Court of Sikkim, B Sharma and A Moulik, along with two officers from Horticulture & Cash Crop Development Department namely Executive Director, Sikkim Organic Mission, Dr S Anbalagan, and Additional Executive Director, MK Pradhan, on the panel of judges.

DrAnbalagan elucidated on the plus points of organic farming stating that organic agriculture is a unique production management system which promotes and enhances agro-ecosystem health.

Forty student members each from the LLCs of TashiNamgyal Academy, TashiNamgyal Senior Secondary School, Enchey SSS, Modern SSS, West Point SSS, PaljorNamgyal Girls SSS, Deorali Girls SSS and Tadong SSS participated in the competition.

Speaking for the motion, DishaBhujel of PalzorNamgyal Girls SSS secured the first position with PushkarBhujel of TashiNamgyal SSS who also spoke for the motion coming in second. PreetiBiswakarma of Enchey SSS spoke against the motion and secured the third position in the competition.

The first, second and third place holders were awarded with cash prize of Rs 6000, Rs 4000 and Rs 2000, respectively along with certificates while other participants received certificates of participation.
