Awareness programme on child rights held in Lumsey

Gangtok, 27 Aug:

State Child Protection Society [SCPS] in collaboration with District Child Protection Unit [DCPU], Social Justice Empowerment & Welfare Department organised District level coordination meeting cum awareness programme on child rights and child protection issues for various stake holders of East district at the conference hall of the department inLumseytoday.

The coordination meeting was chaired by East district ZillaAdhakshya, SS Bokhim, in the presence of District Collector, East, KapilMeena, Mayor, Shakti Singh Chaudhary, Deputy Mayor,LashayDoma Bhutia, Special Secretary, SJE&WD, DhanJyotiMukhia, and Chairperson, State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Dikila Bhutia.

Programme Manager, ICPS, Bandana Rai, highlightedthe importance of having an understanding about child rights and child protection issues.

The DC East, in his address, urged everyone concerned to work in coordination as these issuesrequire team work and active participation of all stakeholders.

He appreciated the works being carried out by SJE&WD and the various organizations working in the field of child protection and child rights.

Speaking on the occasion,East district ZillaAdhakshya, MrBokhim, said, “If the society is going in the wrong direction, it is not only the department or any organization to be blamed but every individual is equally responsible. Putting an end to all negative and bad influences may take a lot of time but if we work together, the situation can be at least controlled.”

Urging all to work towards the betterment of the society, MrBokhim asked for dissemination of information learnt through the meeting.

Special Secretary, SJE&WD, MsMukhia, while addressing the programme, said that this meeting was organized to spread awareness on child rights and child protection issues while highlighting the works that the department has been initiating for the same.

District Child Protection Officer, East, Deepak KiranRai, gave a PowerPoint presentation on ICPS and status of ICPS being implemented in East district and presented various information and data related to ICPS.

Programme Officer,State Adoption Resource Agency, Peter Rai, briefed onthe process and formalities of adoption while Programme Officer, DCPU, PemaWangmu Bhutia, made a presentation on Juvenile Justice Act and POCSO Act.

Likewise,Counsellor, DCPU [East], LaxanaSubedi, highlighted methods of handling various types of cases related to Child in Need of Care and Protection [CNPC] and Children in Conflict with Law [CCL].

During the course of theprogramme, a short documentary film prepared by the ICPU was also screened.
