North Sikkim Highway disrupted at Toong

Mangan, 29 Aug:

The Mangan-Chungthang axis of North Sikkim Highway was closed at Toong this evening when the concrete surface of the road was left exposed after the earth from below caved away.

The problem had begun yesterday itself when the slope holding up the road started slipping away. Initially, light vehicles could still through by negotiating the stable portion of the road formation here, but after more of the slope clipped away, all traffic was stopped at this location.

Although BRO began restoration work earlier today, the road was further damaged in the evening.

Chungthang SDM, Subash Ghimerey, visited the spot today to take the stock of the situation.

Restoration of the traffic will take some days more, it is learnt.

Meanwhile, the GREF Commander is also scheduled to visit the site on Thursday morning to access emergency restoration.

Commuters plying to Chungthang, Lachen and Lachung are opting for transhipment at this spot as there is no alternate route through to their destinations.
