Organic farming training at Upper Berfok and Yangsum
Gangtok, 05 Sept:
A ward-level farmers training on the principles of Organic Farming and Certification was held today by Mevedir at Upper Berfok and Yangsum ward under Chingthang GPU.
The first session was addressed by panchayat member Babita Khati who welcomed the participants and thanked them for attending the event and outlined the key objectives of the training and hoped that it would go a long way towards achieving sustainability for the village.
Next, Approval Committee President Pushpa Kumar Gurung highlighted the advantages of organic farming and the harms of using chemicals or pesticides in the farm and why Sikkim has chosen the former option.
In the next session, Mevedir Trainer and Supervisor, Jason Sherpa, shared the basic principles of organic farming and highlighted the importance of soil.
He also spoke about Internal Control Systems for Organic certification which has two times internal inspection in Rabi and Kharif season of farms which is again re-inspected or audited by External certification Bodies once a year.
During this inspection, risk assessment is done to ensure the integrity of the organic certification.
He also informed about the recent external inspection and farmers were informed to give cooperation for providing correct information during inspection.
The concluding session of the day was addressed by Yogen Gurung (RDA) who highlighted social issues which the participants need to be aware and contribute in any meaningful manner to the development of the GPU.
