Dzongri Club, Gangtok, is gearing up to organise the fourth edition of the Sikkim Veterans Football Tournament 2018 in a grand manner from 15-22 Sept here at Paljor Stadium.
The tournament, which is strictly for footballers above 40 years of age, will have more than 10 teams from Sikkim, Siliguri, Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
Darjeeling Veterans is the defending champion of the tournament.
Dzongri Club is one of the oldest and more popular clubs of Sikkim formed in the year 1980 and has produced many skilled and talented footballers from the State.
Addressing a press conference here at Paljor Stadium conference hall today, the organising committee chairperson, Thupten Rapgyal, mentioned that this annual tournament was mainly a recreational activity for ex-footballers and veterans to encourage them to stay fit and healthy.
He added that the tournament has also aimed to engage them in productive and sporting activities.
“The tournament is also a good and rare opportunity for young footballers to once again watch the game of former national and State level footballers of the State,” he shared.
Organising committee general secretary, Sumeet Thirani, mentioned that registration for the tournament will close at 5 PM on 10 Sept and the fixture drawn on 12 Sept at 1 PM.
The tournament carries cash prizes and trophies. The knockout tournament will have matches of 35 minute halves and allow substitution of up to seven players in a match. He mentioned that original voter card was mandatory for every player to show as their age proof.
Dzongri Club executive members have extended gratitude towards the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs for constant support to the club and the tournament. The club has also appealed to all to support veteran footballers of the State and region with their presence.
