Warm welcome for National U-15 football team coach Suren Chettri

Sikkimese football coach, SurenChettri, was accorded a warm welcome at Melli check-post today on his return to the State after coaching the U-15 Indian football team. MrChettrihad been deputed as assistant coach of Indian Under-15 team by All India Football Federation [AIFF] in Aug earlier this year.

Members of Siniolchu Football Club, Namchi along with Namchi Volleyball Association, Namchi Sports Hostel, officers and coaches of Sports and Youth Affairs Department, South district welcomed MrChettri in a grand mannertoday.

MrChettri is an assistant coach with Sports and Youth Affairs Department and had been deputed as assistant coach at Namchi Sports Hostel in the year 2000. Sikkimese footballers who have achieved name and fame in Indian professional football are all groomed by MrChettriatNamchi Sports Hostel. Renowned football players like SanjuPradhan, NirmalChettri, KomalThatal and many other young players who have entered professional football have been mentored by MrChettri.

Speaking with this correspondent,MrChettri thanked the State Government and SYA Department for supporting him in taking hiscareerforward. He also thanked his family, friends, SYA officers and coaches for supporting him in the entire journey.

In a formal programme organized in Namchi,MrChettri said, “Sikkim is known as a powerhouse of football and many professional football clubs and academies are always expecting good players from Sikkim. Now another door for footballers of the State has opened for Sikkim.”

MrChettri informed that the shift in his career from being a footballer to a coach happened when he was appointed as a coach in St Xavier’s School, Pakyong in 1998. After working as the school coach for two years, he was appointed as assistant coach in SYA Department under Government of Sikkim in the year 2000, he added.

“I was given the charge to train young boys of NamchiSports Hostel. During the course of time, I took coaching trainings and courses in professional football coaching. In 2016, Isuccessfully qualified for A license professional football coaching and became the first coach holding A certificate license for football coaching in the State,” said MrChettri.

He informed that AIFF had notified him on taking charge as the coach of the Indian U-15 team on 03 Aug this year.

“Following the direction, I took charge of the national team on 05 Aug. We were also invited to play invitational matches in Shanghai, China where eight countries of the world had participated. Our Indian team received good remarks in all the matches played there,” added MrChettri.

He has further extended special thanks to football coaches, Milan Subba and MayalLepcha, for supporting himthroughout his good and bad days.
