Gangtok, 13 Sept:
As a part of the state-level World Tourism Day 2018 celebrations, an open marathon on the theme, ‘Go Organic,’ will be held on 26 September at Pelling in West Sikkim. This 10 kilometres Low Altitude Monsoon Marathon will follow a nature trail to provide an opportunity to runners to enjoy the heritage and natural beauty of the State.
Addressing a press conference here today, chief coordinator of the open marathon, Amar Subba, informed that the marathon is open for all and will also have runners from outside the State.
The marathon will be flagged off at 9 AM on 26 September from Pelling Senior Secondary School playground and will cover the route through Sanga Choeling Monastery, Gaddi Dara, Rani Dhunga and Darap and back to the starting point.
Mr Subba informed that some sections of the route falls along a natural trail, it will provide an opportunity to runners to see the rich flora and fauna of the area. He added that the event has also been planned to promote the rich natural resource of the area worldwide.
Registration of the participants will remain open till 8 AM on 26 September and the top-three winners in men’s and women’s category will be awarded with cash prize and certificates.
West Sikkim is also hosting the World Tourism Day 2018 on the theme ‘Tourism and the Digital Transformation’ with a series of workshops, adventure tourism and other activities this September. Although the World Tourism Day falls on 27 September, the series of activities have already begun in the different parts of the district, it is informed.
The celebration is being organised jointly by Tourism & Civil Aviation Department, West District Administration and West District Tourism Society [WDTS] with the support of tourism stakeholders of West Sikkim.
