Sikkim Veterans Football Tournament gets underway

Gangtok, 16 Sept:

The fourth edition of Sikkim Veterans Football Tournament 2018 kicked off here at Paljor Stadium on Saturday. Snow Lion Football Club outplayed Chandmari United 4-2 in the inaugural match of the tournament.

The inaugural day of the match had former national footballer, Sonam Lepcha, as the chief guest.

The tournament is being organised by one of the oldest and more popular football clubs of the State, Dzongri Club, Gangtok.

Seventeen teams from within and outside the State are participating in this knock-out tournament.

The tournament has two teams from Darjeeling and one each from Kalimpong and Siliguri along with three teams from West Sikkim, one each from North and South Sikkim and eight from East Sikkim.

Darjeeling Veterans is the defending champion of the tournament.

The tournament is strictly for footballers above 40 years of age and presents a rare opportunity for the people to see former national and state-level players on the field again.

The organisers share that this annual tournament was mainly a recreational activity for ex-footballers and veterans to encourage them to stay fit and healthy.

Dzongri Club has appealed the football lovers and people to come and support their favourite teams in the tournament.

In the inaugural match, Kamal Bagdas scored a brace for Snow Lion FC, while his teammates Karma Gyampo and Norden Bhutia contributed a goal each to the team’s victory. Lhendup Lepcha and Norbu Tshering scored a goal each for Chandmari United.

On Sunday, Darjeeling United and Freedom Veterans registered victories.

In the first match of the day, Darjeeling United outplayed Namthang Veterans 4-0. Naveen Gurung scored a brace in the 5th and 58th minute, while his teammates Pankaj Rai in the 37th minute and Passang Tamang in the 54th minute contributed one goal each.

In the second match of the day, Freedom Veterans edged past Pandim Veterans 2-1.

Karan Gurung in the 44th minute and Palden Bhutia in the 64th minute scored a goal each for Freedom Veterans while the lone goal for Pandim Veterans was scored by Rinzing Bhutia in the 14th minute.
