Rabong to host Chodzo Fest from 28-30 Oct

Rabongla is gearing up to host Rabong Chodzo Fest 2018 in a grand manner from 28 to 30 Oct at Chodzo Lake premises in Rabongla, South Sikkim.

The three-day tourist festival will feature a series of cultural, traditional, musical, adventure and other activities and events.

An organising committee has been formed with area MLAm Power Minister DD Bhutia, as chief patron, Cooperation Department Advisor, TT Bhutia, as patron and Sub Divisional Magistrate, Rabongla, Jigmi Wangchuk Bhutia, as chairperson along with the support of stakeholders, youth and people of Rabongla.

It is informed that series of meetings are being conducted to discuss preparations for the upcoming festival.

Addressing a press conference here today, the Power Minister informed that the main objective behind the festival was to promote places of tourist interest in Rabongla sub-division at the national and international levels and also to promote local talent by providing them a wider platform.

He mentioned that Rabongla has been working since 2006 on the vision on the Chief Minister to promote Sikkim in tourism. He mentioned that Chodzo Lake has been developed as a major tourism destination.

Mr Bhutia mentioned that the festival is coinciding with the 10th edition of North East Riders Meet 2018 which is also scheduled to be held from 26-28 Oct at Barfung in Rabongla in South Sikkim.

Open Road Wanderers Motorcycle Club of Sikkim [ORWMCS] is hosting this event for the first time in Sikkim. He mentioned that the organising committee of the festival has decided to invite the CM as chief guest on 28 Oct which marks the conclusion of NERM and opening of the tourism festival.

He added that the first evening of the festival will have performances by artists of Rabongla sub-division which will be followed by performances by local artists of Sikkim on the second day. The final day will have popular band from Nepal, Nepathya, perform on stage.

He informed that the stage will also be shared by top five finalists in singing of the recently concluded Himali Pratibha ko Khoj.

Mr Bhutia informed that the festival will showcase traditional foods and cuisines, costumes, traditions and culture of the State. He mentioned that the festival has also been working to preserve the cultural and traditional heritage of the State.

“Chodzo Lake has been developed well and having the capacity of 60 lakh litres of water. So we are now planning to pump water from the lake to address the water scarcity problems of nearby villages and Rabongla Bazaar during dry season in the future,” he stated.

The SDM informed that the venue will also hold stalls for traditional food and cuisines, local handicrafts and handloom and other products. He mentioned that the festival will also feature sports and adventure activities.

He stated that tourism stakeholders from Nepal, Bhutan and Thailand have been invited to showcase their culture, tradition and tourism potential during the festival.

“This event will be an exchange programme between nations to learn about tourism practices and other knowledge of the respective country,” he said.

The area MLA further informed that more than a lakh tourists have been visiting Buddha Park in Rabongla every year along with other places of the area.

“The main objective of the development of tourist spots and to conduct such tourism activities in the sub-division is to promote Rabongla as all-the-year-round tourist destination,” he said.
