Tika Ram Sapkota completes solo bike ride spreading suicide prevention awareness


Gangtok, 19 Sept:

Tika Ram Sapkota today completed his solo bike ride of East Sikkim undertaken to generate wider awareness on suicide prevention and mental health. The solo bike ride was flagged off on the occasion of Suicide Prevention Day on 10 Sept from District Hospital, Singtam in East Sikkim.

Mr Sapkota is a Multipurpose Health Worker of Health Department and is presently posted at Makha Primary Health Sub Centre.

During this 10-day ride criss-crossing the district, he covered all PHCs and PHSCs and various educational institutions in East District and interacted with the people and students on various issues related to mental health and suicide prevention to create mass awareness. There are seven PHCs and 47 PHSCs in East district.

The bike ride was funded by District Hospital Singtam under District Mental Health Programme [DMHP] and IEC of Health Department and held under the supervision of CMO East, Dr Tshering Laden, and nodal officer of DMHP, Dr Satish Rasaily.

On concluding his solo bike ride, Mr Sapkota received a warm welcome from Health Department officials, members of non-governmental organisations, bikers and people of the capital in front of Tourist Information Centre at MG Marg.

He was also escorted by members of his biker club, Open Road Wanderers, from Vajra to MG Marg.

While sharing his experience of the 10-day ride, Mr Sapkota expressed happiness on successfully completing the ride and getting to interact widely with people, especially students, on the issue of suicide prevention and mental health.
