Adventure Integration Camp at Teen Kharkey Parakha
Gangtok, 23 Sept (IPR): Tourism & Civil Aviation Department organized a two-day “Adventure Integration Camp” in association with Gnathang Machong Eco-Tourism Development Cooperative Society at Teen Kharkey-Parakha under Gnathang Machong constituency in East Sikkim on 21 and 22 September 2018. This was part of the commemoration of The Year of Indian Adventure 2018 declared by the Ministry of Tourism.
The first day of the event saw the registration of more than 50 students of tourism from different government schools of the constituency which was followed by sensitization programme on adventure tourism delivered by key resource persons from the Tourism Department and IHCAE, Chemchey.
The main event had Chairperson, Commerce & Industries Department, Choppel Dzangpo Bhutia, as chief guest accompanied by Madan Kumar Pradhan, Joint Director (Adventure Cell), Tourism & Civil Aviation Department, Deputy Director (Adventure Cell), Tashi Geley, and Tourist Officer (Adventure) Manoj Chettri.
The students were given hands-on training in adventure activities such as rock climbing, rappelling, traversing, Zoomer climbing, Burma bridge etc by the expert trainers from Sikkim Mountaineering Association headed by Kunzang Namgyal Bhutia (Everester), President of Sikkim Mountaineering Association (SMA) cum Assistant Director, Sports & Youth Affairs Department.
The students were provided basic knowledge on adventure tools and equipment and given a demonstration on putting up tents and provided tips on adventure survival strategies.
The youth of Teen Kharkey and neighboring villages also participated in the adventure camp.
The Machong Primary Health Centre also made a mobile medical van along with doctors available at the spot in case of any medical emergencies. The Mayfair SPA & Resort sponsored packed meals for the students.
The chief guest thanked the Tourism Department and the organizing committee for organizing and executing such an event in the State.
The vice-president (Org), Gnathang Machong Eco-Tourism Society, Narayan Pradhan, applauded the efforts of Chief Minister Pawan Chamling in taking Sikkim Tourism to greater heights of prosperity. He further informed that this was the second time that such an adventure camp was organized under the patronage of the area MLA DT Lepcha at the village.
Teen Kharkey-Parakha has immense potential in adventure and homestay tourism as the region is ideal for paragliding, trekking, rock climbing and other adventure activities. The area MLA has worked tirelessly in the past four years to develop and promote different villages such as; Yakten Village, Machong Loosing, Rikyep Mankhim, Chochen Pheri, Parakha and Rolep into potential ecotourism destinations.
He has also desired to promote the entire belt of Teen Kharkey as a potential adventure eco-park to encourage and inspire the local youth to take up adventure tourism as their primary source of earning and make them self-reliant.
The Eklavya Model Residential School is another important project under construction at Teen-Kharkey village.
The participants were later awarded certificates of participation from the Tourism & Civil Aviation Department. The event ended with vote of thanks proposed by general secretary, GMETDCS, Rishikesh Gurung.
