Indra Jatra winds up with grand celebration
Gangtok, 23 Sept:
The three-day long Indra Jatra celebrations concluded here at Manan Kendra this evening with a grand showcasing of Newari traditions after a chariot rally held earlier in the morning offering prayers were offered to Lord Indra and Kumari.
Chujhachen MLA, Bikram Pradhan, who is also the patron of Indra Jatra celebration committee, delved on the challenges facing preservation of Newari culture and traditions which have been fading in the State. He stressed on the role and responsibilities of community elders in helping retain these aspects of the community and called on more people to shoulder the responsibilities.
He also urged support for the under construction Newari Bhawan which could be completed soon if the community could mobilize funds of Rs. 10 crore.
Sikkim Newar Guthi’s Dilu Kumar Maskey presented a detailed report on the initiatives taken by the Guthi and expressed his gratitude towards the government for the overwhelming support received for promotion of culture, tradition, language.
He also urged the members of Newari community here for more contribution in terms of monetary support and active engagement for the promotion of the Sikkimese Newari way of life.
Mr. Maskey also stressed on the need for the establishment of a Regional Cultural Research Institute for research of Sikkimese communities, their traditions and cultures.
Sikkim Newar Guthi also felicitated Chief Minister Pawan Chamling for his constant endeavours towards preservation of culture and traditions and support for the Newari community its language and culture in Sikkim.
The citation was handed over in the morning session of the Indra Jatra prayers at Bhanu Udayan.
The Guthi has also honoured and felicitated the late KP Pradhan (Posthumously), footballer Sanju Pradhan, martial artist Savitri Pradhan, Ganesh Pradhan and Bhagdev Pradhan.
Pintso Chopel Lepcha, MLA Gangtok, and Shyam Pradhan, MLA Arithang, handed over the trophies and mementoes to winners of the various competitions organised by the Guthi as part of the Indra Jatra celebrations.
