PM arrives in Gangtok for another historic occasion


Gangtok, 23 Sept:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed here at the Libing Helipad at around 4:30 PM today, alighting in Sikkim on the eve of the inauguration of the State’s first airport – the Rs 605 crore greenfield airport developed at Pakyong. The PM is scheduled to inaugurate the airport on Monday, setting Sikkim up for air connectivity with commercial flights here slated to begin 04 October.

The Prime Minister was received at the helipad by Governor Ganga Prasad, Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, Minister of State (Independent Charge) PMO and Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister for Civil Aviation and Commerce and Industries Suresh Prabhu, MoS SS Ahluwalia, Speaker KN Rai, Deputy Speaker Sonam Gyatso Lepcha, MP Lok Sabha, MP Rajya Sabha, Cabinet Ministers, GOC of 17 Mountain Division, Chief Secretary AK Shrivastava, ACS SC Gupta, DGP, DC (East), SP (East) and representatives from the BJP state unit.

Along his drive to raj Bhavan, his halt for the night, the PM waved at people lined up along both sides of the road from Ganju Lama Dwar and Deorali Bazar.

It may be recalled that the Pakyong Airport is the hundredth airport of the country.

Spice Jet is scheduled to begin commercial flights from Pakyong Airport from 04 October. The Bombardier Plane of Spice Jet, having a capacity of 78 passenger, will fly in from Kolkata and return, landing on the 1.7 km x 30 metre runway to put Sikkim on the air-connectivity map.

Initially there will be flights to Kolkata and Guwahati, but there is talk of starting flights to more cities.

Similarly there is a proposal to start some international flights from Pakyong as well to Kathmandu (Nepal), Paro (Bhutan), Bangladesh and Bangkok. The Chief Minister himself has urged the concerned ministry to start flights to Kathmandu and Bhutan as soon as possible, it is informed.

During his last visit to Sikkim, the Prime Minister had declared the State the First Organic state of the Country, a historic moment, and now, after two years, he is here to join another historic moment for the State.

The Administration Building of the Airport which is spread to an area of 3000 square feet has the capacity to provide services to 100 passangers at a timeit is informed. The runway of the Airport is 1.7 Km and width is 30 metres.
