Darjeeling Towns Club has emerged the champion of the fourth edition of Sikkim Veterans’ Football Tournament 2018 played here at Paljor Stadium. In the final match played on Tuesday, Darjeeling Towns Club outplayed defending champion’s Darjeeling United Veterans 3-0.
With the help of a goal by Finjo Wangdi Sherpa in the 31st minute, Darjeeling TC ended the first half with 1-0 lead.
While the cup holders were trying hard to equalise, Sanjay Sashankar extended the Darjeeling TC lead to 2-0 minutes into the second half in the 47th minute and sealed victory for the team when he completed his brace in additional time.
Finjo Wangdi Bhutia of Darjeeling TC was adjudged the Man of the Match while Manjit Singh of Royal FC, Siliguri, received the Man of the Tournament trophy. The Fair Play trophy was awarded to Snow Lion FC, Gangtok.
Transport Minister, DT Lepcha, was present as chief guest for the final match.
The final day also featured an exhibition friendly match between 50-plus veterans of Namcheybong and Dzongri FC, which the former won 3-1.
The tournament was organised by one of the oldest and more popular football clubs of the State, Dzongri Football Club, Gangtok.
17 teams from different parts of Sikkim along with teams from Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri had participated in the tournament.
Speaking to media persons after the match, Darjeeling TC officials expressed their happiness and satisfaction with the team’s performance informed that Darjeeling TC has former professional and national-level footballers from Darjeeling who have been participating in different veterans’ tournaments across the country.
They congratulated the hosts, Dzongri FC, for consistently organising the tournament and urged them to continue their efforts.
“Such veterans’ tournaments provide a good opportunity for former footballers of the region to meet each other and have a wonderful time. Such tournaments will also encourage youngster towards football and other sports and live a healthy life,” they said.
