Gangtok, 25 Sept:
Sikkim Chess Association [SCA] has announced plans to organise the second edition of the Jigdel Denzongpa Memorial State Level Chess Tournament 2018 from 29 September to 02 October here at SDF Bhawan hall.
The tournament will be played on Swiss League System of nine rounds. More than 300 players from all over the State are expected to participate.
Addressing a press conference here today, SCA general secretary, Mahendra Dhakal, mentioned that the tournament was started last year in the memory of Jigdel Denzongpa, a good chess player and promoter of the State. The Late Denzongpa was working as DE in Energy & Power Department and passed away last year.
He informed that the tournament will carry a total prize money of Rs 80,000 sponsored by batch-mates of the late Mr Denzongpa [1987 to 1991 batch of MREC, Jaipur].
Cash prizes will be provided to the top-20 players and top five in each age category will be awarded with trophies. The tournament will feature U-7, U-9, U-11, U-13 and U-15 in boys and girls.
Registration for the tournament is underway at the SCA office at Lumsey and interested persons can also contact SCA for further details. The last date for the registration is 28 Sept till 4 PM.
On behalf of SCA, Mr Dhakal thanked the family members and batch mates of the late Mr Denzongpa for their support to chess. The press conference was also addressed by advisor, Phurba Wangyal Bhutia and assistant treasurer, Saroj Sapkota of SCA.
