Coordination meet to prep for 10 Oct disaster mock exercise
Gangtok, 25 Sept (IPR): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) will be conducting a state-level mock exercise in all four districts on 10 October. This mock exercise is also being simultaneously conducted in ten districts of West Bengal.
A co-ordination/ orientation meeting to conduct the mock exercise was organized by SSDMA here at Mannan Bhawan chaired by Chief Secretary AK Shrivastava, and attended by Secretaries and Nodal Officers of various State/ Central Government line departments, ADGP Sikkim Police, representatives from the Army, Air Force, ITBP, SSB, District Disaster Management Authorities, NGOs, Press and Media.
The four District Collectors and District Officers from various line Departments also attended the meeting through video conferencing.
State Relief Commissioner, Secretary, Land Revenue & Disaster Management Department, Tsegyal Tashi, briefed the meeting about the upcoming multi-state mock exercise and underlined the importance of the co-ordination-cum-orientation Meeting in making the mock exercise successful.
He directed all the District Collectors to activate their disaster management plans in order to carry out the mock exercise in their respective districts.
He informed that preparedness for the main mock exercise will be reviewed at a table-top exercise on 09 October.
At the outset, Maj Gen (retd.) VK Datta, Senior Consultant, NDMA, stressed on the importance of mock exercises, disaster management plans, roles and responsibilities of stakeholders, etc. He gave a detailed presentation on the mock exercise scenarios, Incident Response System, etc.
The Chief Secretary, who also chairs the State Executive Committee for Disaster Management, directed all the stakeholders to work together towards making the mock exercise successful. He shared his experience as a young officer in the districts and informed the meeting about the ways in which he used to deal with disasters with the few resource that were available at the time.
He informed the stakeholders that all the resources available in the State could be used during the time of disasters. He interacted with all the DCs and sought information about the recent calamities that occurred in the districts.
The District Collectors reported that preparations were well under way and they were ready to conduct the mock exercise.
