Gangtok Road Runners to build momentum for Kanchenjunga Marathon

Sikkim Mountaineering Association has announced plans to organise a short distance run, Gangtok Road Runners, on 07 October here. This is a promotional event for the upcoming third edition of Kanchenjunga Marathon to be held from 31 October to 07 November in West Sikkim.

Kanchenjunga Marathon is the first high altitude marathon of Sikkim and starts from the base camp of the third highest peak of the world, Khangchendzonga.

The top-three men and women in the open category and the winner of the veteran category of Gangtok Road Runners will get the free entry in the upcoming Kanchenjunga Marathon.

Addressing a press conference here today, the Director of Kanchenjunga Marathon, Everester Kunzang Gyatso, mentioned that Gangtok Road Runners was a promotional activity for the upcoming mega event.

He added that another aim of the event was to encourage the people towards fitness and live a healthy life.

Gangtok Road Runners has two categories of 10 KMs and 3 KMs and will be flagged off from Ridge Road and cover the route towards TNA Gate, Zero Point, Swastik and Bakthang Falls and return to Zero Point, Secretariat Road, Bhanu Path, Dukit Pan Dokan and end at the starting point.

Runners in 3 KM race will have to cover the route of Ridge Road, TNA Gate and then turn to Bhanu Path, Dukit Pan Dokan and end at the starting point.

The organisers have fixed the registration fee of Rs 500 for runners in the 10 KM run and Rs 200 for students in the 3 KM run.

Mr Gyatso informed that Kanchenjunga Marathon was started in 2015 with 20 runners from Sikkim and other parts of India and other countries and could not be held in 2016 and in 2017 the marathon had received 62 national and international runners.

He informed that 20 runners have been confirmed so far for this year and the number would likely to go above 60 by the end of the registration process. This year, the marathon carries the total prize money of Rs 6.35 lakhs.

“Kanchenjunga Marathon is an event to further promote tourism in Sikkim and also provide employment to local youth. This event has also been successful in promoting talented runners from Sikkim and encouraging the people to live a healthy life,” he expressed.
