The valedictory function of a special commemorative event to mark the beginning of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was organised at Raj Bhavan in the evening of 02 Oct, a press communiqué received from Raj Bhavan informs.
Governor Ganga Prasad, Additional Chief Secretary to Governor,Dr K Jayakumar, Acting Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University,Dr JP Tamang, Vice Chancellor of Sikkim State University, Professor GK Niroula, Director, Higher and Technical Education, HRDD, DK Pradhan, Registrar, Sikkim University, TK Kaul, Director School Education,HondalaGyaltsen, officers of Raj Bhavan, professors of various universities and colleges of Sikkim, principals, teachers and students were present on the occasion.
It may be mentioned here, Raj Bhavan Sikkim in collaboration with Sikkim University had organised ‘Inter School/ College and University Level Elocution and Essay Competition’ on “Relevance of Gandhian Ideals in Today’s India” and “Perspective of Gandhian Philosophy in the Context of New India” in a bid to connects students and youth with the teachings of Gandhiji.
The event was also a part of nationwide celebration being initiated by various ministries, Raj Bhavans in the respective States and Government departments. The event had the participation of 15 Secondary and Senior Secondary Schools, two Universities and six colleges from various parts of Sikkim.
After the formal screening of the entries to the competition spanning over two days on 28-29 Sept, 20 best entries were selected for the final event which took place at Raj Bhavan in the evening on 02 Oct.
Addressing the participants, juries and the audience present in the valedictory session, the Governor exhorted that Gandhiji, known to be the greatest apostle of truth and non-violence in the world, is relevant in the past, present and future world and India in particular.
“If humankind wants sustainability in its existence, the world must follow the path as shown by Gandhiji.Gandhiji’s way of simple living with high thinking has the capacity to solve many of the complexities the country is facing today. The world riddled by conflict, violence and misery requires truth, non-violence, mutual co-existence and Satyagraha, the ideals propagated by Gandhiji,” the Governor said.
The Governor called upon all to be a part of massive cleanliness drive “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” to fulfill the vow the nation has taken to dedicate a clean India as a real tribute to Bapu on his 150th birth anniversary in 2019.
The function concluded with the Governor handing away prizes and certificates to the winners and participants in their respective categories.
