Rakesh Gurung wins Jigdel Denzongpa Memorial Chess Trophy

Gangtok, 03 Oct:

Rakesh Gurung emerged the champion of the second edition of Jigdel Denzongpa Memorial State Level Chess Tournament 2018 played here at SDF Bhawan Hall. Thendup Tamang took the second position while Saurab Subba finished the tournament on the third place.

The four-day long State-level tournament was organised by Sikkim Chess Association and had begun on 29 Sept. The tournament had the participation of 261 players from different parts of the State.

The prize distribution ceremony of the tournament held on 02 Oct had Secretary, Sports & Youth Affairs Department, SD Dhakal, as chief guest accompanied by Sikkim Olympic Association president, BK Roka, as guest of honour.

Cash prizes, trophies and certificates were handed over to the top-20 players. Trophies and certificates were also handed over to the top-04 among the U-7, U-9, U-11, U-13 and U-15 boys’ and girls’ categories of the tournament.

In his address, the chief guest urged young players to always compete in the spirit of sports.

He stated that winning and losing were part of competing, but the most important aspect was participation.

While congratulating all participants in the tournament, Mr Dhakal encouraged them to move ahead dedicatedly and with hard work for brighter future.

Likewise, SOA president congratulated SCA for organising such a big tournament in the memory of a late chess player and promoter of the game. He also appreciated the efforts of the family members and friends of the late Mr Denzongpa for coming forward to support the tournament.

He congratulated parents for supporting their children in chess. He also assured to provide support to SCA in its future endeavour.

Earlier, Chief Arbiter of the tournament, Dharmendra Kumar, appreciated the growth of chess in Sikkim and detailed the various achievements of the State in regional and international levels in a short period of time.

He appreciated the support and encouragement provided by parents and urged the State’s players to continue with their form and hard work to reach higher levels in chess in the near future.

SCA advisor, Phurba Wangyal Bhutia, spoke about the life and contributions made by the late Mr Denzongpa for the growth of chess in the State. The prize distribution ceremony was also addressed by SCA general secretary, Mahendra Dhakal.
