Sikkim strength-lifters excel at National c’ship

Strength-lifters from Sikkim have once again impressed with an outstanding performance in the 27th Senior National Men & Women Strength Lifting Championship 2018 held from 25-28 Sept at Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh. The Sikkim Strength Lifting Association [SSLA] team has returned with a rich haul of 17 medals from the championship.
The team bagged seven gold medals, five silver and five bronze medals.
International strength-lifter, Pema Dorjee Bhutia, won the title of the Best Coach and Ranju Sundas was adjudged the Best Woman Referee in the championship and Edu Tshering Bhutia was also awarded for lifting the highest weight of 72.5 kgs in inclined bench press in women’s category in the championship.
In the championship, Edu Tshering Bhutia won two gold medals, Pema Dorjee Bhutia won one gold and one silver medal, Chandra Kumar Chettri bagged one gold and one bronze medal, Ranju Sundas won one gold and one silver medal, Srijana Subba bagged a gold and a silver medal and Thinlay Wangdi Bhutia won a gold medal.
Other silver medallists are Manju Pradhan and Wangdup Tamang and bronze medals were bagged by Kalpana Chettri, Leomit Lepcha, Bhim Subba and Homnath Siwakoti.
A 32-member team of SSLA accompanied by Kado Bhutia as team manager and Pempa Tamang as team coach had represented the State in the championship. It is informed that the championship had the participation of 750 athletes from 27 States.
The SSLA felicitated the medal winners and other team members here at the White Hall Gym today. The felicitation had Secretary, Sports & Youth Affairs Department, SD Dhakal, as chief guest accompanied by Additional Director, Kamal Chettri, and executive members of SSLA.
Mr Dhakal stated that SYA Department has been supporting and encouraging strength lifting in the State and further assured to provide all possible assistance and support to SSLA. He mentioned that sports is a priority engagement of the State Government and that the government has been working for the welfare of sportspersons by providing all required infrastructures, facilities and support.
In his report, SSLA chief coach, Pema Dorjee Bhutia, informed that the State team members gave an outstanding performance and that the performance by women lifters was highly appreciated at the championship.
He added that competition was very tough but every team member gave their best. He assured to bring out more talented lifters from different corners of the State.
Mr Bhutia mentioned that this senior national championship was also a selection trial for team India for the upcoming 7th International Strength Lifting Championship scheduled to be held in Jan next year at Nagpur. On the same, he added that around 10 lifters from Sikkim are likely to make their place in team India.
SSLA general secretary, Sonam Tshering, in turn, stated that it was a proud moment for the SSLA. He also expressed gratitude towards the SYA Department for supporting strength lifting.
