West Dist preps for disaster management mock drill

Gyalshing, 03 Oct [IPR]: As per directives received from the Chief Secretary, a preparatory meeting for the mock exercise on earthquake and disaster preparedness for West district was held today here at the District Administration Centre at Rabdentse.

The meeting was chaired by District Collector, West, Dr AB Karki, accompanied by Superintendent of Police, West, Tenzing Loden Lepcha, ADC [West], DPO [West] and departmental heads and representatives.

The exercise will simulate an earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter Scale with intensity 8.9 MSK occurred at 11:45 IST on 10 Oct, 2018.

The mock exercise will be conducted simultaneously at five locations, including hospitals, Gyalshing market areas, schools and major hazardous units to assess and improve the administration’s capacity in mobilising resources and reaching out to the affected communities swiftly.

The DC informed that observers from Government of India have been deputed for the aforesaid exercise. He urged all the officers to be responsible and work collectively to come up with effective result.

The DPO briefed about the proceedings of the day. He informed that Emergency Operation Center at the districts will be immediately activated, assess the damage, form rescue teams under Incident Commanders and dispatch them to the respective locations.

Rescue drills will be conducted in coordination with various departments such as Traffic Control, Fire, Health, Police, SSB, NYK and all line departments.
